1. Give Your Three Months’ Notice

One of the most important legal requirements in Ireland is giving a minimum of three months’ notice to the Civil Registration Service (HSE) before your wedding date.

This applies to all couples getting married in Ireland, whether you’re planning a civil ceremony, a religious ceremony or a secular ceremony.

It’s always a good idea to arrange your appointment well in advance, particularly during busy wedding seasons, as appointment availability can vary.

2. Book Your Notification Appointment

Both partners must attend a face-to-face meeting with a Registrar before the wedding.

During this appointment, you’ll confirm your intention to marry, present the required documentation and complete the necessary paperwork.

If you’re travelling from abroad or have exceptional circumstances, alternative arrangements may be available, so it’s worth contacting your local Civil Registration Office as early as possible.

3. Gather Your Documents

Before attending your appointment, make sure you have all of the required documentation ready.

This generally includes:

• Valid passports or government-issued photo identification
• Original birth certificates
• Personal Public Service (PPS) numbers (if applicable)
• Details of your ceremony and solemniser
• Your chosen wedding venue
• Any additional documentation relating to previous marriages or civil partnerships, if applicable

4. Receive Your Marriage Registration Form (MRF)

Once everything has been approved, you’ll receive your Marriage Registration Form (MRF).

This is one of the most important documents you’ll need for your wedding day, as it legally authorises your marriage to take place.

Keep it somewhere safe and remember to bring it with you for your ceremony.

5. Choose Your Witnesses

You’ll need two witnesses, both aged 18 years or older, to be present during your ceremony.

These are often close friends or family members, but they can be anyone who meets the legal requirements.

6. After the Ceremony

Following your ceremony, the Marriage Registration Form must be signed by:

• Both newlyweds
• Your solemniser
• Your two witnesses

The completed form is then returned to the Civil Registration Service so your marriage can be officially registered.
